The cryptocurrency world has long struggled with a fundamental paradox: how do you give people complete control over their digital assets while making the experience simple enough for everyday use? For years, the answer has been seed phrases and complex passwords, security measures that work in theory but often fail in practice. In 2026, there’s a better way forward, and it starts with passkeys. Let’s explore more from here.
Passkeys are credentials that validate your identity using touch, facial recognition, a device password, or a PIN. Adding a passkey will replace email login and serve as 2FA.
Think of passkeys as the ultimate password upgrade. They deliver all the benefits of a strong, complex password — the kind security experts recommend with uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, special characters, and at least 16 characters long, but without requiring you to remember, type, or store anything. Instead of relying on something you know (a password or seed phrase), passkeys leverage something you have (your device) and something you are (your biometric data, like your face or fingerprint).
To put it in simple tech terms, passkeys represent the next evolution in digital authentication, and they're not just a cryptocurrency innovation. Built on the robust FIDO (Fast Identity Online) standards developed by the FIDO Alliance, passkeys are rapidly becoming the new standard for secure login across the entire tech industry. Major platforms like Apple, Google, and Microsoft have already integrated passkey support into their ecosystems, recognizing that traditional password-based security has reached its breaking point.
The technology works through public-key cryptography, the same underlying principle that secures blockchain transactions. When you create a passkey, your device generates a pair of cryptographic keys: a private key that never leaves your device and a public key that's shared with the service you're signing into. So, if you need to authenticate, your device uses your biometric data to unlock the private key, which then proves your identity to the service without ever transmitting any secret information over the network.
This approach fundamentally changes the security model: with traditional passwords, there's always something that can be stolen, intercepted, or tricked out of you through social engineering. Using passkeys, there's nothing to steal because the secret never leaves your device, and there's nothing you can be tricked into revealing because you never know the secret yourself.
Even though the cryptocurrency industry has achieved remarkable technological breakthroughs, user experience hasn't kept pace with innovation. At the heart of this challenge lies the seed phrase — a 12 or 24-word sequence that serves as the master key to your digital assets. While seed phrases provide true self-custody and decentralization, they also create an enormous burden for users.
Consider the reality: users must write down their seed phrase, store it in a secure physical location, never photograph it, never store it digitally, never share it with anyone, and simultaneously ensure they won't lose it in a fire, flood, or simple household move. It's a security model that demands perfection from imperfect humans living in an imperfect world.
The statistics tell a sobering story. Industry research suggests that billions of dollars in cryptocurrency have been permanently lost due to forgotten passwords or misplaced seed phrases. Meanwhile, phishing attacks targeting seed phrases have become increasingly sophisticated, with scammers creating fake wallet interfaces, customer support impersonations, and urgent security alerts designed to trick users into revealing their secrets.
Losses to phishing scams decreased 83% year-over-year, falling to $83.3 million in 2025, from $494 million in 2024, according to a report from Web3 security tool Scam Sniffer. Still, losses to phishing attacks peaked in the third quarter of the year, during the market’s most active period, signaling that phishing losses are closely aligned with market activity.
This creates an impossible dilemma for newcomers to crypto. Do they write their seed phrase on paper, risking physical loss or damage? Store it digitally, creating a potential attack vector? Use a hardware wallet, adding complexity and cost? Or just switch to trust a custodial service, defeating the entire purpose of cryptocurrency's promise of self-sovereignty?
Each option involves trade-offs that many users simply aren't equipped to evaluate. The end result is predictable: either people avoid cryptocurrency entirely, or they take security shortcuts that leave them vulnerable. Funny as it sounds, the industry's growth is constrained not by the technology itself, but by the cognitive and practical burden we place on users trying to keep their assets safe.
First impressions matter, and in cryptocurrency, the onboarding experience often determines whether someone becomes a long-term user or gives up in frustration. Traditional wallet setup processes can take several minutes and involve multiple steps: generating a seed phrase, writing it down carefully, verifying you've written it correctly, storing it safely, and then finally accessing your wallet. And it feels exhausting before you've even started.
With Anodos Wallet and passkeys, we've compressed this entire process into seconds. Users can create a fully secure, self-custodial XRPL account simply by using Face ID or Touch ID on their device. The experience is embedded into the platform with no new app to download, there's no seed phrase to write down, no password to create and remember, and no complex security checklist to follow. You authenticate with your face or fingerprint, and you're ready to start managing your digital assets.
This isn't just about mere convenience, though the latter matters enormously. We’re aimed at removing barriers that prevent people from experiencing the benefits of cryptocurrency. Every additional step in the onboarding process represents a point where potential users might abandon the process, since by streamlining authentication through passkeys, we're making self-custodial crypto accessible to people who would otherwise never attempt it.
The beauty of passkeys lies in their ability to eliminate the two biggest threats facing cryptocurrency users: permanent loss and theft through phishing.
When it comes to loss prevention, passkeys fundamentally change the equation. Your authentication credential isn't stored on a piece of paper that can burn in a fire or a text file that can be accidentally deleted. Instead, it's securely stored in your device's hardware security module and can be synchronized across your devices through your device manufacturer's encrypted cloud services. If you lose your phone, you don't lose access to your assets; you simply authenticate on a new device using the same biometric credentials.
The anti-phishing properties of passkeys are equally revolutionary. Traditional phishing attacks work because users can be tricked into entering their credentials on fake websites or revealing their seed phrases to impersonators. With passkeys, this attack vector simply doesn't exist. Your device cryptographically verifies it's communicating with the legitimate Anodos service before authentication occurs. Even if a scammer creates a pixel-perfect replica of the Anodos Wallet interface, the passkey won't work because the cryptographic signature won't match. The phishing attempt fails automatically, without requiring any security awareness from the user.
This represents a massive shift in the security model. Instead of placing the burden on users to identify threats and make correct security decisions under pressure, the technology itself provides protection. Users no longer need to be security experts to keep their assets safe—the system is secure by default.
There's something deeply intuitive about using your face or fingerprint as your security credential. It's always with you, can't be forgotten, and uniquely identifies you. But the implementation details matter enormously, and this is where Anodos leverages the sophisticated biometric systems built into modern devices.
Moreover, such architecture also protects against sophisticated attacks. The secure enclaves in modern smartphones are designed to resist even physical attacks on the device, using specialized hardware that makes it extremely difficult to extract the private keys even with direct access to the phone. Combined with the biometric requirement, this creates multiple layers of protection that would be virtually impossible for an attacker to overcome.
Self-custody shouldn't require a degree in operational security. Users deserve full control over their money without sacrificing the simplicity they've come to expect from modern digital experiences, and passkeys allow us to deliver on both promises simultaneously.
The adoption of passkeys at Anodos is a part of a broader vision for what cryptocurrency can become. For too long, the industry has accepted that security and usability exist in tension, that users must choose between controlling their assets and having a pleasant experience.
